The The “Rebirth” of Redfish Grill in the Historic Matheson Hammock Park
The Redfish Grill was coveted for being the one and only waterfront restaurant in Coral Gables and also the “go to” spot for superior waterfront dining in all of Miami Dade County. Its picturesque setting and romantic ambience coupled with tantalizing seafood made this the venue of many a first date.
If you are new to town, you may be wondering why I’m using the past tense. In September 2017, Hurricane Irma caused some heavy flooding and left extensive damage. As the newspaper articles stated: “Irma washes away a quaint waterfront restaurant.” Red Fish Grill and Christy’s, a local steakhouse located on Ponce de Leon in the City Beautiful, share the same ownership and the owner stated that they “want to rebuild” but that it “won’t be so simple” because even the coral rock structure was damaged. In 1992, when the owners had just received the lease, Hurricane Andrew hit and shut Hammock Park down for the following two years…so this “wasn’t their first rodeo” when it comes to renovating the structure. Ultimately, it wasn’t until 1996 that Red Fish Grill first opened its doors for business.
Fast forward to early 2019 and the planning process was finalized to renovate the Red Grill to its former glory with the City of Coral Gables. The restaurant icon is set to launch in the first quarter of 2020 under the direction of Chef Adrianne Calvo. She traveled extensively in the French Riviera and immersed herself in learning from actual fisherman for a truly authentic taste that is sure to please the most discerning taste buds.
WIth Chef Adrianne at the helm, patrons of the new and improved Red Fish Grill can expect the ultimate dining experience coupled with delectable cuisine promising maximum flavor. She will feature “an extensive beer, wine and whiskey library to go along with craft cocktails designed by the chefs instead of the mixologists.”
